Dubai is among the few places in the Middle East where the public transportation system is modern, affordable, and efficient. In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) operates the metro, tram, buses, marine transport, all of which integrate with the Nol Card payment system. For students, optimizing daily travel ensures a more efficient use of time and significant savings in cost.

Tips & Student Hacks
• Nol Card student discount: Students (13–23 years old) can apply for discounted Blue Nol Cards. Applications can be submitted through the RTA website with Emirates ID and university documents.
• Air-conditioned bus stops: Many bus stops are air-conditioned, making the wait much easier, especially during summer.
• Free University & Hotel shuttles: Many accommodations and universities offer free shuttle buses to nearby metro stations, malls, or beaches — check with your admin or reception.
• RTA App: Download the RTA app to plan routes, recharge Nol cards, and get real-time transit updates.
• Avoid rush hours: 7:30–9:00 AM and 5:30–7:00 PM are peak hours for Metro and Tram — plan travel outside these windows if possible.
Pitfalls to Avoid
• Forgetting to tap out your Nol Card can result in maximum fare being charged.
• Assuming taxis are cheap — they’re convenient but much more expensive than Metro/Bus.
• Carrying expired student documents when using a student Nol Card — this can result in fines.
• Not planning for weekend service timings — some services have modified schedules on Fridays and public holidays.
• Eating or drinking on public transport is prohibited and subject to fines.
• Women & Children Cabins are available in both Metro and Tram; men entering may be fined.
